The academic council of Mumbai University (MU) has decided to allocate 75 marks for the main theory examination while 25 marks will be fixed for internal assessment. By implementing this change, MU has replaced the 60:40 marking pattern with the 75:25 pattern.
Out of the 25 marks for internal assessing, 20 marks will be allotted to internal tests and the remaining five will be granted for attendance as well as class performance of the candidates. The new marking scheme will apply to all undergraduate (UG) courses offered by MU and will be effective from the current academic session.
The previous marking pattern of 60:40 faced a lot of criticism about marks being granted in an unfair fashion or leniently to raise the overall pass percentage or performance of individual colleges, after the TYBCom Results were announced in 2012. Hence, the academic council scaled down marks of such students whose internal and assessment scores differed by over 20%, which again brought criticism from teachers and students alike. Thereafter, MU decided to adopt the 75:25 marking scheme as per the norms of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
However, as of now, the marking scheme for postgraduate (PG) courses will continue to be in the 60:40 pattern. Policy changes are expected to be made after the next meeting of the academic council in May, 2014.
In another recent move, MU has decided to grant grace mark of 10 to the final-year students of the Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) program, to boost the success rate of the students. As per the new rules of internal gracing, students who acquire the minimum threshold marks specified by MU will be awarded the grace marks to help them clear the subject.
