Tribal Affairs Ministry has sanctioned funds for 68 residential schools in the North East Region. Of these, 21 schools are exclusively for tribal girls. Besides, in-principle approval has been given for three more schools for which funds have not yet been released.
This Ministry of Tribal Affairs, per se, does not run any school anywhere. However, it attempts to fill some critical gaps in the system by extending financial assistance to State Governments/UT Administrations and NGOs/Voluntary Organizations for constructing schools for tribal students and in some cases, to meet some of their expenditures in their day-to-day operations. The funding done by this Ministry is demand driven i.e. on the basis of the proposals received from the State Government / UT Administrations /NGOs/VOs.
This information was given by Minister of Tribal Affairs Shri Jual Oram in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.
